- 1). Follow safety precautions before stripping loose paint. The dust from this project can settle into your eyes or respiratory system. Wear gloves, goggles and a dust mask. Drape drop cloths or tarps over the floor and nearby furniture to catch the peeling fragments of paint.
- 2). Strip large areas of loose paint with a double-edge blade tool. Because of its long handle, it may work better for a large area of wall. Apply pressure in a back-and-forth motion. This may be difficult for high areas of wall that require a ladder to reach.
- 3). Strip smaller areas of paint with a paint scraper. Using a forward thrusting motion, scrape the areas of peeling paint.
- 4). Sand any loose paint that remains on the wall after you have scraped it. Use a hand sander to cut down on the time involved if you have a large section of wall to sand. Apply even pressure.
- 5). Wipe dust from the wall with a clean cloth. Run your hand along sections of the wall to inspect it for any areas of peeling paint you may have missed. If you did miss an area of paint, use the scraper or the sander again.
