- 1). Begin the garter stitch method by knitting the first and last stitch of a row. Work the remaining stitches of the row as directed in the knitter's pattern. Repeat this edging for every row.
- 2). Begin the English method by slipping the first stitch as if knitting. Draw the yarn toward the side of the work farthest from the knitter and push the right-hand needle into the first stitch as if knitting. Slip that stitch onto the right-hand needle. Complete the row to the last stitch as the pattern directs. Slip the last stitch as directed above. Begin the next row by purling one stitch and work the remainder of the row to the last stitch. Purl the last stitch.
- 3). Create the French method by slipping the first stitch, as if knitting. Draw the yarn toward the side of the work farthest from the knitter and push the right-hand needle into the first stitch as if knitting. Slip that stitch onto the right-hand needle. Complete the row to the last stitch as the pattern directs. Knit the last stitch. Repeat this technique for every row.
- 4). Begin the German method by knitting the first stitch, work the remainder of the stitches to the last stitch. Slip the last stitch purlwise by drawing the yarn towards the knitter, then pushing the right-hand needle into the first stitch as if a purl stitch were being made. Slip that stitch onto the right-hand needle. Complete the second row of this method by purling the first stitch, then work the pattern to the last stitch. Slip the last stitch purlwise, as described above.
