- 1). Change your desktop background. Right-click the desktop, select "Personalize," "Desktop Background." Choose an image from the list or browse for a new image, then click "OK."
- 2). Customize window colors and appearance. Right-click the desktop, select "Personalize," click "Window Color and Appearance," then alter the settings in the window. You can select different window colors, alter color intensity and enable transparency for windows (These options will only be available for Home Premium users.). Premium users can also disable Aero by clicking "Open classic appearance properties for more color options" then switching the setting to "Windows Vista Basic," which may improve computer performance.
- 3). Alter display settings. Right-click the desktop, select "Personalize," "Display settings," then use the slider to set your display resolution. Click "Apply" when you are done making changes.
- 4). Alter Start menu programs. You can pin programs to the Start menu for easy access by right-clicking on the program and selecting "Pin to Start Menu." If a program appears in the Start Menu shortcut list, and you wish to remove it, right-click on it and select "Remove from this list."
- 5). Customize the Taskbar. Right-click on the Taskbar, select "Properties," then alter the options settings in the various tabs in the Taskbar properties window. Select "Apply" to accept the changes. If you want to move your Taskbar to a different location, uncheck the "Lock the Taskbar" option, then left-click on the Taskbar and drag it to a different side of your screen..
