How to Install a Delco Radio in a 1971 Corvette

    • 1). Open the passenger door, fold back the driver’s seat and open the battery compartment located in the rear access area of the car. Using an open-end wrench, disconnect the negative lead from the battery.

    • 2). Locate the wiper switch console plate in the upper center portion of the dash. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws holding the wiper switch console plate. Two screws are located at the rear-upper section and two are located near the bottom. Disconnect the wire harnesses connecting the wiper switch and indicator light.

    • 3). Remove the four screws holding the center gauge bezel to the left and right sections of the lower dash. Remove the existing radio knobs and retaining nuts, if applicable. Gently pull the cluster towards you. Label and remove the electrical connections and remove the cluster. Consider replacing the dash lights if they are the original bulbs. Since the labor to remove the cluster has been done, the small investment in new bulbs will save you time and effort later on.

    • 4). Remove the old radio if one is installed. When replacing a newer-style DIN 1 radio back to an original Delco radio, the center dash bezel must be replaced with an original-style unit. The bezel required for a Delco radio installation has two round holes on each side of the mounting area for the radio knob posts to go through. Original-style reproduction replacement bezels can be obtained from most Corvette parts suppliers.

    • 5). Assess the existing wiring harness. Replace with original-type wiring when restoring the car back to an original Delco sound system. Connect the speaker wiring harness and radio antenna cable to the rear of the Delco radio. Connect the harness going to the original remote power transistor and heat sink assembly and power supply. Secure the Delco unit in the stereo mounting bracket with the mounting screws. Removing the right-lower dash pad will give additional access to the audio system wiring and the power transistor assembly.

    • 6). Reconnect all connections to the center gauge cluster assembly and carefully reinstall it back in dash. Install the washers and retaining nuts on the radio knob posts and install the knobs back onto the posts. Reconnect both connections to the wiper switch console plate and reinstall.

    • 7). Reconnect the negative terminal to battery.
