- If the kitchen cabinets are in good shape, refinishing is an excellent option. Repainting or staining kitchen cabinets is a do-it-yourself project that will take less time than replacing or refacing. For the cost of a few gallons of paint and supplies, kitchen cabinets can be painted and finished to a professional look for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets.
- Refacing cabinets is an option if more of an update is desired. The cabinets remain, but the doors and drawer fronts are replaced with a new veneer or laminate. The exterior of the cabinet frames are resurfaced to match the new door and drawer fronts. This is more expensive than refinishing but still costs far less than new cabinets.
- Refacing may update the look of the kitchen, but also conceals the original wood and is more expensive. If the cabinets are still in good shape, painting or staining is the least expensive way to brighten up a dull kitchen.
