- 1). Switch out 20 percent of the water in your tank for clean water, 4 days prior to leaving on vacation. Do this once a day, for the 4 days. This will prevent excess proteins from the food blocks from contaminating the water.
- 2). Determine exactly how long the fish need to be fed. You might be vacationing for one week, but traveling to and from your destination adds an extra 24 hours to the away time. This means you will be gone for eight days, not seven.
- 3). Select fish blocks that are adequate in size for the length of time you will be gone. You'll also need to factor in the the number of fish, and the size of your tank. Most blocks are designed to feed about 20 fish in a 10 gallon tank. The variable is the number of days indicated on the packaging.
- 4). Choose a location in the tank, where you'll place your blocks. If you have a particularly aggressive fish in your tank, place the block nearer to the more passive ones, to ensure everyone gets fed.
- 5). Set the blocks in the tank shortly before you leave. The block will start to dissolve in four hours, so your fish will be able to eat starting at that time.
