- 1). Cut the paint seam between the window frame and window stops with a utility knife. The window stop is the small strip of wood on each side of the window that forms the track for the lower window to ride when opening the window.
- 2). Insert a stiff blade putty knife between the window stops and the window frame to pry the stops away from the window frame. Remove any small nails that remain on the window frame with a pair of pliers. The nails that secure the stops are small brads you can remove with a simple pull of the pliers.
- 3). Raise the lower window, and ask a friend to hold the window in place. Insert the putty knife in the metal track within the window frame. Pry the metal track out of both sides of the frame with the putty knife. Carefully pull the bottom of the lower window sash out, and remove the sash cord on each side of the sash. Remove the sash from the window frame.
- 4). Remove the thin strip that separates the lower window sash from the upper window sash with the putty knife. The strip is on each side of the window frame and directly in front of the upper window sash. Locate the weight pocket cover on each side of the window frame. The cover is on the lower part of the window frame and may secure with a screw.
- 5). Remove the weight pocket cover using the appropriate screwdriver to remove the securing screw. Some weight pocket covers will simply pry out with a putty knife.
- 6). Reach in the weight pocket, and pull out the weight. Untie the sash cord from the weight and tie the sash cord around the new weight. Insert the weight back inside the weight pocket.
- 7). Place the weight pocket door back into position, and secure the door either by using the retaining screws or pushing the door in until it is flush with the window frame.
- 8). Place the thin strip over the face of the upper window sash, and secure the strip to the window frame with 1-inch flathead wood screws. It is a good idea to drill pilot holes through the strip prior to installing the screws to keep the strip from splitting.
- 9). Place the lower sash into the window frame, and ask your helper to hold the sash while you reattach the sash cords to each side of the sash. Place the window sash in the open position in the window frame, and ask your helper to hold the sash in place.
- 10
Push the metal tracks back into the window frame under the lower sash. Ensure that the tracks fully seat in the groove and that they are flush with the window frame. - 11
Reattach the window stops to the window frame, again using flathead wood screws. Pre-drill the holes for the screws prior to installing the screws to prevent the wood from splitting. Lower the window sash.
