- 1). Cut any tangled or leftover threads from around the upper threading area. Look for dust or debris and remove with a mini-vacuum, tweezers or by hand.
- 2). Check the bobbin thread, the bobbin itself and the bobbin area of the machine. Thread that is jumbled on the bobbin spool or is too tight will cause the machine to stall. If the bobbin is too low, reload it with more thread. If the bobbin itself is nicked or damaged, replace it. If the bobbin appears fine, it is still a good idea to replace it with a fresh bobbin.
- 3). Check the machine tension by looking at the last stitches before the stall. If the stitches on top of the fabric look irregular, then replace the thread with a new spool. If the stitches on the backside or bottom side of the fabric look irregular, then replace the bobbin with a new one.
- 4). Check the machine's manual for guidelines on setting tension for different fabric weights and needles. Remove the needle and replace with the correct size. Adjust the tension dial according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Adjust the fabric, thread and needles to the appropriate types. Make sure that the machine is turned off when changing out bobbins, needles and so on.
