Tile Kitchen Countertop Ideas

One of the least expensive and most decorative ways to create a countertop in your home is to use tile. Many types of tile can be used successfully on a countertop, whether the design is modern or traditional in style.

While some tiles should be avoided, such as soft stones like limestone or marble, nearly every type of tile can be used to create a decorative and functional counter in a kitchen or bathroom.

    Granite Tile Counters

    • If the look of a granite kitchen counter is something you desire, but the cost makes it prohibitive, consider using granite tiles. Granite tiles are made from the same material used in large slabs, but cut down to 12-inch squares that are 3/8-inch thick. Granite tiles are installed over a plywood backer, with a thin grout joint between them.

Have a finished edge put on the front tiles, so the front piece of granite rounds up and over the edge in a bullnose to complete the design.

    Two-Tone Decorative Tiles

    • Ceramic tiles of nearly every color and size can be used on countertops. Since ceramic tiles have a glaze that is available in countless finishes and shades, try using two colors to create a pleasing design.

Use one color of tile for the top, or workspace of the counter. Use a second, coordinating color tile for the edge. Use one, large "V" tile for the edges of the counters, rather than using a smaller, bullnose tile. A V tile is shaped like a V and covers both the front and top edges of the counter. This will create a decorative two-tone design.

    Modern Tile Design

    • Porcelain tiles make great kitchen countertops, since they are extremely dense and durable. New styles of porcelain are available in finishes that mimic metal, fabric and leather. For a modern tile design on a kitchen counter, use large, 24-inch tiles in a metallic finish. Choose from stainless steel, copper or bronze and cover the entire counter.

The large tiles will keep the grout lines to a minimum, while the metal finish slowly wears in over time. The result is a personalized, patinaed counter with a modern, industrial look.
