How to Make an Ice Fishing Spear

    • 1). Decide on a working surface with ample lighting for the construction of your ice spear. Clean the area of any dirt, debris or dust.

    • 2). Test your wooden shaft by lifting it and maneuvering it within your hands. Decide on the proper length for your spear (traditional ice fishing spears can be found from 5 1/2 feet to 7 feet long). Practice transferring the weapon between your hands while attempting downward thrusting motions to determine a comfortable length. Measure and mark this length with a Sharpie pen.

    • 3). Put on your safety gear. Cut the wooden shaft using the miter-box saw, and sand the corners of the shaft using the electric grinder until both ends are cleanly rounded.

    • 4). Designate which end of your shaft you intend for your spear blade, and draw a straight line in the middle of the shaft at that end. Measure 2 1/2 inches down the shaft, and create a small "X" at that depth. Hold the spear firmly in one hand as you create an incision along the drawn line, using the miter-box saw. Apply pressure until the groove has been cut exactly to your "X" marking.

    • 5). Locate the base of your ice spear head opposite the barbed prongs, and apply glue to both sides of your spear head base. Insert the spear head base into the groove you just cut into the wooden shaft, and, with the spear prongs pointing upward, carefully fasten the area where the metal and wood meet by coiling several lengths of hemp in a tightly bound pattern.
