Mold in My Concrete Walls That Will Not Go Away and Just Comes Back

    Aspergillus

    • There are more than 160 species of Aspergillus in the world, making it one of the most widespread on the planet. It is one of the most common bacteria found in homes and, though unlikely in adults with healthy immune systems, may cause health issues including headaches, insomnia and respiratory difficulty.

Outdoors it often appears in soil and other organic material, while indoors it appears in areas with humidity greater than 55 percent. On concrete it is most likely to appear in cracks or other damaged areas, where water is more likely to settle. The most important aspect of eradicating Aspergillus is eliminating humidity, with a dehumidifier in the room. You then vacuum the remaining colonies wearing gloves and a breathing mask.

    Alternaria

    • Alternaria is another mold commonly found in the home. It will usually appear on textiles and window frames. Like other bacteria, it prefers spots with high humidity or another water source, making basement floors ideal for growth. You can identify it by its long, soft hairs and it may grow to be a dark olive green or brown color.

To get rid of the established colonies, thoroughly dry the area and eliminate humidity. Once you dry out the area a bleach solution or vacuuming will take care of the rest.

    Stachybotrys

    • Stachybotrys is perhaps the most serious types of mold and causes an array of health problems that can get worse over time. It is not as common as other varieties, but its side effects are often more severe. Like other kinds of mold, it often appears in soil, dirt and air and may make a home for itself in concrete.

It needs standing or running water but will do well if humidity is high. Exposure to it can be dangerous and cleaning is best in professional hands. If you leave it unchecked, people around you may experience insomnia, hair and memory loss and negative effects to the respiratory system.

    Cladosporium

    • Cadosporium is one of the most common outdoor molds in the country. Like other molds, it often appears in soil and organic matter and can easily come into the home. It can establish colonies in concrete floors when moisture is present. If the room is too humid or there is standing water present, the mold will be able to thrive. Prolonged exposure may cause coughing or runny nose and some people may experience rashes and other allergic reactions. Drying the room and using bleach should get rid of Cladosporium.
