- 1). Brush the surface of the rusted metal vigorously with the metal brush to remove all debris and to begin to scrape off the heaviest accumulation of rust. A strong back-and-forth movement is best.
- 2). Sand the remaining rust off the surface with sandpaper, using a circular motion. A sanding block can be a big help for flat surfaces or metal plates.
- 3). Wipe down the metal and remove loose matter with a clean, dry rag.
- 4). Protect implements or tools that will be exposed to moisture or water by rubbing them down with a mineral-based oil such as spindle oil.
