- 1). Sketch your gate design on paper and label with dimensions. Measure the distance between the hinge post and the latch post. For hinge and latch clearance, subtract 3/8-inch to find the width of the gate and gate frame. Measure the height of the fence to determine the height of the gate. Measure the distance from the top of the top fence rails to the bottom of the lower fence rails to find the height.
- 2). Measure and mark 2 2 by 4-inch boards, the width of the frame. These will form the top and bottom frame members. Cut the ends at 45 degree with a miter saw. Keep in mind the the marks represent the longest sides of the cuts and the cut lines are convergent (not parallel). Repeat this process to cut the sides. Place the boards on a flat surface, arranged in the shape of your frame.
- 3). Measure and mark a 1 by 4-inch board that is 2/5 (.4) times the length of the shortest frame side. Again, cut the ends at 45 degrees. Keep in mind the the marks represent the longest sides of the cuts. Repeat this to cut 4 corner braces. Pre-drill holes in the braces at the top, bottom and center of the cuts, 3/4-inch from the edge. Pre-drill the corners of the frame so you can use a 3-inch screw to join the sides to the top and bottom of the frame. Screw the corner together, using a drill and driver bit.
- 4). Square one corner of the frame, using a carpenter's square. Lay the brace over the corner of the frame, to form a triangle. Align the mitered cuts of the brace with the outer edges of the frame. While keeping the corner of the brace square, screw 1 1/2-inch screws through the brace into the frame. Repeat to square and brace the 4 corners. Turn the frame over so the brace-side is down.
- 5). Measure and cut infill planks or pickets. Arrange them on the frame to determine the best positions. Make sure the planks are parallel to the sides of the frame and spacing between the planks is equal. With the gate temporarily assembled, mark the left or right edge of the planks on the upper and lower members of the frame. Lay a yardstick across the planks and draw a line across all planks at the level of the top of the upper frame member. These reference marks will help you quickly assemble the gate.
- 6). Position the first plank and nail it into the frame, 2 nails at the top, 2 nails at the bottom. Using the reference marks, continue until every plank is securely attached. The nails should be twice as long as the thickness of the planks.
