- 1). Determine which tools you want in the roll and arrange them along a table from the shortest to the tallest.
- 2). Measure the height and width of each tool and record them on a sheet of paper. Each measurement tells you the height and width of the pocket that you need to create for the tool. Add 1/2 inch to the width of the tool to determine the width of the pocket. Subtract 1 inch from the height of the tool to determine the height of the pocket.
- 3). Add up all the pocket width measurements and add 1 inch to the total. This will be the width of the leather piece you cut. Take the longest tool and add 1 inch to the height. Double that number so that you have enough leather for the front and back of the pocket. For example, if your tallest tool is 10 inches, add 1 inch to that to make 11 inches and then double that figure to get a total length of 22 inches.
- 4). Cut the piece of leather according to your measurements. Fold the length in half and put the fold at the bottom. This will be the bottom edge of all of your pockets.
- 5). Measure 1/2 inch from each edge except the bottom fold and continue the marks around the entire edge of the leather on the front and the back. Those marks indicate where you will fold the leather to sew a hem.
- 6). On the front of the tool roll's left-hand edge, measure from the bottom fold to a point 1 inch below the height of the shortest tool. On the right-hand edge, measure from the fold to a point 1 inch below the height of the tallest tool. Connect the two points by drawing a line with your chalk or fabric marking pencil and a ruler or measuring tape. Cut the leather along this line.
- 7). Measure and mark lines for each pocket seam according to the tool measurements you took.
- 8). Unfold the leather. Turn under and sew the hem line all around the edge. On the edge where you cut the pocket height, turn the leather under just enough to sew a slight hem.
- 9). Fold the leather again. Sew the left edges together and the right edges together. You now have one large pocket with a diagonal pocket edge.
- 10
Sew the pocket seams so that you sew through the top and bottom layers of the leather to create each tool's pocket. Repeat until all the pocket seams are sewn. You now have your tool roll's pockets completed. - 11
Insert all the tools into the appropriate pockets. Roll the tool roll up starting from the left-hand side. Mark the location where the right-hand side lays against the rest of the tool roll so that you know where to put your choice of fasteners. If you are using fabric fastener, lift the flap of the right-hand edge to place the fastener in the correct place. If you are using a clasp of some kind, adhere it to the leather according to the instructions. A very easy way to secure the roll is to simply create a leather strap. Take a strip of leather that measures 1/2 to 1 inch wide. Fold it in half so the outside (good) sides of the leather are touching each other. Sew the edges together and then turn it inside out. Fold the strap in half and at the fold, sew it to the back of the right-hand side of the tool roll. Now when you roll the tool roll from the left you can tie the leather straps around the roll to keep it closed.
