- 1). Plug in the machine and make sure the On/Off switch is in the "Off" position.
- 2). Insert the filter basket into the filter holder and fill the basket with coffee grinds to the 2- or 4-cup level. Pack the coffee lightly and clean any excess from the filter rim. Avoid overfilling the basket.
- 3). Insert the filter holder into the brewing head. Start with the arrow on the thumb hold lined up with the arrow on the left side of the machine and turn it firmly to the right as far as it will go until the arrow is as far right into the "Lock" range as possible.
- 4). Turn the boilercap counter-clockwise to unscrew it. The boilercap is located on top of the machine. Use the glass carafe to measure the water and pour it into the boiler container. It may be helpful to add a little extra water to account for what is lost to steam, but the carafe should never be filled beyond the metal band.
- 5). Replace the boiler cap and tighten it. Place the carafe lid on the carafe so the lid opening points toward the pouring spout of the carafe.
- 6). Place the carafe under the filter holder so the nozzle in the filter holder points through the corresponding opening in the carafe. If you wish to brew the espresso directly into cups, click the cup adapter into place.
- 7). Close the steam release knob by turning it clockwise.
- 8). Turn on the machine and the indicator light will illuminate. Wait two minutes while the water heats up, then watch it pass through the grinds. It will drip slowly at first.
- 9). Turn off the machine once the coffee has stopped brewing. Pour your espresso if you didn't brew it directly into cups.
