- 1). Separate the musty towels from other laundry items. If there are any mold or mildew spots on the towels, pretreat them by dabbing a small amount stain treatment or soap directly on the stain.
- 2). Set the washing machine to a hot-water wash cycle and start the cycle. If your washing machine is a top loader, add 1/2 cup of vinegar as the machine fills up. Add the laundry detergent at this time as well. If your washing machine is a front loader, put the vinegar in the bleach reservoir. Add the detergent as you normally would.
- 3). Add the towels to the washing machine once the water is nearly done filling the washer and close the lid if it is a top loader. If it's a front loader, add the towels and close the door. Allow the machine to wash, rinse and spin as you normally would. Open the machine once the process is complete.
- 4). Remove the towels and smell them. If they smell clean, move them to the dryer. If they are still musty, repeat from Step 2 until they are clean. You could add a little more vinegar to the wash, if desired.
- 5). Set the dryer to its highest heat setting. Completely dry the towels. Remove them from the dryer. Fold and put them away as you normally would.
