- 1). Spray a generous amount of penetrating oil around the threaded section of the spark plug. Also, spray the penetrating oil into the threads of the engine head. Wait at least one hour for the penetrating oil to absorb into the threads on the spark plug and the engine head.
- 2). Insert a 1/2-inch drive spark plug socket over the frozen spark plug. Insert a 1/2-inch drive extension into the spark plug socket. Slowly turn the spark plug counter-clockwise with a 1/2-inch drive ratchet. If the plug loosens, finish removing the plug and all of the other frozen plugs the same way. If the plug will not budge, spray more penetrating oil around the threads of the spark plug and the engine head, and let it absorb for another hour.
- 3). Slowly turn the spark plug counter-clockwise with the ratchet, extension and socket. If the spark plug loosens, finish removing it and the other plugs. If not, break all of the porcelain off the top of the spark plug with a small hammer and pliers.
- 4). Drill a 1/2-inch to 1-inch hole into the top of the spark plug with an electric drill and a drill bit that is one size smaller than the extractor tool. Remove the drill bit and insert the extractor into the hole. Tap the top of the extractor into the spark plug with a hammer until it stops moving.
- 5). Turn the extractor counter-clockwise with an adjustable wrench until the spark plug loosens from the engine head. The extractor tool will grasp to the sides of the drilled-out hole and turn the stuck spark plug. Finish removing the plug and move to the next frozen spark plug. Use the penetrating oil twice for one hour each time before drilling out the spark plug.
