Painting Over Doilies

    • 1). Place newspaper on your table or work surface to protect it.

    • 2). Using paint primer, prime the surface of the saucer, plate, tray or other item to which you are applying the stencil image, if that surface requires priming. Surfaces such as wood, terra cotta and metal may require a primer before proceeding. Let the primer dry.

    • 3). Paint a background color on the item you will be stenciling, using paint appropriate to the surface. Acrylic craft paints work on most surfaces, as do latex-based house paints.

    • 4). Cut out the section of the doily you want to use for the design. You may choose to use the lacy, straight border from a rectangular doily, the lacy outer perimeter from a round-shaped or other doily, or you can use the entire doily, if you wish.

    • 5). Place the doily, right side down, on top of the newspaper.

    • 6). Spray a single, light coat of adhesive across the back of the doily section. Let dry for one minute, until it is tacky.

    • 7). Turn the doily section right side up, so that it is facing you.

    • 8). Position the doily carefully on the surface of the item you are stenciling. The doily will stick to the surface, but it will have a little give. Work slowly and carefully to avoid tearing the doily while positioning.

    • 9). Apply your paint over the doily and surface of your item. Use a light, back and forth spraying motion for spray paint, applying a single layer of paint. For acrylic paints, use a stencil dauber brush to apply the paint. A dauber brush is a rounded, flat-foam brush. Apply paint to the flat surface of the dauber, then blot any excess paint on paper towels and dab the flat edge of the brush onto the surface of the doily. Do not drag the brush, as this may cause paint to seep under the doily. Allow to dry.

Peel the doily away from the surface carefully to avoid touching any area of the painted surface you have just stenciled.
