How to Decorate Baseboard Trim & Crown Moulding

    • 1). Draw a rough diagram of the room. Measure the length of the walls and write this in your diagram. Add the four wall lengths together. Multiply that number in feet by 0.5 to find the approximate total of square feet of coverage you need for trim or molding. For both trim and molding in the same room, use the combined sum of the walls as your square footage total.

    • 2). Look over the room to determine if you want to stain or paint. Stains can only be used on bare or recently stripped wood, but can add warm, natural tones to the room. If you have wood doors, try to match a stain to the existing doors. Painted trim and moldings can be done in any color, with solid white creating a sophisticated look. Alternatively, use a contrasting color to make the framing of the room stand out.

    • 3). Purchase enough wood stain or paint to cover the amount of trim and molding you need to cover. A half-gallon should cover a single coat on 175 square feet. If you are having a color specifically made for your trim, purchase slightly more than you need to have available for future touchups.

    • 4). Sand or wipe clean the trim or molding as needed to smooth it and remove any dust, debris, or dirt. Allow the surface to dry if cleaner was used.

    • 5). Apply your wood stain or paint in one even coat, working from one end of the molding or trim to the other in smooth horizontal strokes. Allow the material to dry for as long as the label recommends, before applying a second coat. Leave the second coat to dry thoroughly.

    • 6). Paint on flowers, a vine, or simple shapes like a fleur-de-lis. Use stencils, foam stamps, or freehand drawing to add the decorative touches to your trim and molding.

    • 7). Apply a clear coat of polyurethane according to the manufacturer's instructions to seal in the stain if used. Allow the trim and molding to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours, ventilating the room if possible.
