How to Make Tomato Cages for Cherry Tomatoes

    • 1). Read the information about your cherry tomato plant and find out how tall it grows.

    • 2). Cut your stakes, sticks or pieces of PVC pipe so that they are about the same height your plant will be. For most tomato cages 2 feet of length is sufficient. It's fine if the stakes are a little taller or shorter than the plant, as long as the plant is well supported.

    • 3). Insert the stakes at least 2 inches deep, and between 6 and 8 inches away from the base of your tomato plant. Make sure each stake is stable before wrapping the twine.

    • 4). Wrap twine at 4 inch intervals around the stakes, wrapping all the way around each stake. Tie each piece of twine in a knot once you reach the stake from which you started. Each cage should have at least four pieces of twine around the stakes at 4 inch intervals for optimal support.
