Fall Planting Guide for Indiana

    Frost Dates

    • Hoosier gardeners should make sure their crops will be ready for harvest before the first frost date in their area. Near the Ohio River, this is normally in late October. The South-Central and Lake Michigan regions may see frost around mid-October. Northern Indiana could experience frost in early to mid-October.

    Southern

    • Rhubarb can normally be planted from mid-October through the end of November. Radishes may be planted in October--early in the month for the South-Central region, near the middle of the month in the Ohio Valley. Plant asparagus as late as November or December. Residents near the Ohio River can plant these late in December or in early January.

    Northern

    • In the northern part of the state, cress can be planted in mid-August to mid-September. Kohlrabi can be planted through the middle of August. Leaf lettuce and radishes may be planted from July through September. Plant rhubarb from early October through mid-November in this region.
