- 1). Remove the butternut squash from the vines with the sharp knife. Leave about 3 inches of vine attached to the squash to enable you to handle them by the vine only. The rinds of the squash are very fragile and can be easily damaged because they are not ripe yet.
- 2). Wash the butternut squash with mild dishwashing soap. Use the cloth to wipe the rinds gently with the soapy water and rinse them well.
- 3). Dry the squash thoroughly with a soft cloth after washing them.
- 4). Place the butternut squash in a sunny location with daytime temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A southern-exposure window or a warm porch would be ideal for ripening the squash.
- 5). Rotate the squash every day so the rinds receive equal exposure to the sun.
- 6). Continue to expose the squash to warmth and sunshine for one to two weeks. Within this time, you should notice the skin of the butternut squash gradually turn to a golden color and the rind become tougher.
