What Do I Do If My iPhone Freezes Up?

    Recharge the iPhone

    • Your iPhone cannot operate correctly if it is extremely low in power. Connect the iPhone to an iPhone AC adapter, or plug it into a high-power USB port on your computer. A USB port on a keyboard, a FireWire accessory or other low-power accessory ports cannot charge your iPhone. Watch the display for a battery indicator to appear. This may take up to two minutes if the iPhone charge is extremely low. Disconnect the iPhone and try a different power adapter or a different USB port if the iPhone battery indicator does not appear or if it flashes three times and then turns black.

    Restart the iPhone

    • If your iPhone is not low on power and freezes, try restarting it. Push the "Sleep/Wake" button at the top edge of the iPhone. Hold down the button until you see a red slider on the display, and then move the slider with your finger to turn off the iPhone. Wait a moment, and then turn the iPhone back on by pressing on the "Sleep/Wake" button again. If this does not work, reset the iPhone by holding down the "Sleep/Wake" button and the "Home" button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. The Apple logo should appear on the display when the iPhone if the reset is successful.

    Update the Software

    • If your iPhone continues to freeze when you use it, the software could be the problem. Apple periodically releases updates to resolve problems for the iPhone through iTunes. Check iTunes to confirm you have the most recent version available. Check for any available iPhone updates by clicking on the iPhone in the "Devices" section of iTunes and clicking "Check for Update" in the Summary window.

Restore the iPhone to Factory Settings

    • As a last resort, you can restore your iPhone to its original factory settings. To do this, connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. Choose the iPhone under "Devices," and click on the "Restore" button in the Summary window. All the data on the iPhone will be deleted, including music, videos, contacts and other files. This data is already backed up to your computer through iTunes if you have the default automatic sync settings. If you have changed your sync settings to manually sync, back up the iPhone by clicking the "Sync" button before restoring the iPhone.
