- 1). Attach the metal-grade sandpaper to the electric sander. Sand off all the rust until all you see is smooth shiny metal.
- 2). Inspect the other parts of the metal object for other rust spots. If the metal object is flat, look on the underside to ensure that the rust hasn't eaten through it. If you see discoloration on the underside, sand it smooth as well.
- 3). Apply a rust neutralizer solution, available at any home improvement or automobile supply store. To be safe, apply the solution over the entire metal object. If you are working on a large object, such as a car, only apply the solution to the rusted section. Allow the solution to fully dry.
- 4). Paint the entire piece of metal to seal it from further rust damage. If you don't want to paint the object with colored paint, paint it with a clear topcoat instead. If the item is a vehicle, take it to a body shop, and let a professional paint it.
