- According to "Fine Gardening" magazine, fertilizers contain three main chemical elements: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Commercially made rose food can be bought, but a complete fertilizer with 5(N)-10(P)-5(K) can also be used.
- Roses need the most care in the growing season. The Ohio State University suggests that roses be fertilized three times every year: Make the first application in the spring, the second application at the peek of blooming in late June or July and one last application in the fall.
- Many gardeners amend the soil of new rose beds with organic matter to improve drainage and the amount of nutrients it can retain. Add compost or well-aged manure to provide additional slow release nutrients. Mix 2 to 4 inches of organic matter with the soil to the depth of 12 inches in new rose beds.
