- 1). Look at the sunlight in the planting area to ensure that it receives full sun all day long. This is especially important for small redwood trees. If needed, prune off overhanging limbs from other trees using a pole saw.
- 2). Water the soil under the redwood tree every two to three days to keep it constantly moist. Water to a minimum of a 12 inches in depth, which you can test by digging a hole with a spade. Although redwoods can withstand mild droughts, they prefer moist, humid environments where the soil never dries out.
- 3). Spread an acidic fertilizer, like that for azaleas and rhododendrons, around the base of the redwood once per month during the growing season. Use the amount of fertilizer specified on the package. If you have a very large redwood tree, use the instructions for square-foot application rather than the number of plants.
