- 1). Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple (itunes.com). When the download completes, double-click on the file to install iTunes. Click to accept the license agreement, and then click "Next" and specify an installation folder. Reboot your computer, if prompted. If you have iTunes installed before you buy your iPhone, it's still a good idea to upgrade to the most recent version to ensure full support of your iPhone.
- 2). Press and hold the button on the top of the iPhone to turn it on. Plug one end of the iPhone USB cable into the iPhone and the other end into a USB port on your computer. ITunes opens and detects the device automatically. The first time you connect the iPhone, you're asked to sync your contacts, calendar and bookmarks automatically. Click "Yes" or "No" on this screen, and then click "Next." You can later set up the device to synchronize with iTunes to manage your music, movies, photos and applications. Press the eject icon beside "iPhone" under "Devices" on the left-hand side of iTunes to safely remove the device from your computer. Apple doesn't advise just unplugging the iPhone from your computer.
- 3). Tap the "Home" button below your display to wake up your iPhone. The screen goes dark after a few minutes of inactivity. Swipe your finger across the displayed "Hold" bar to activate the touch screen if necessary. All of your applications are displayed on this screen, called the home screen. Your most important functions are at the bottom: phone, mail and Safari -- for Web browsing, depending on your data plan.
- 4). Tap an icon on the home screen to activate the corresponding application. Tap "Phone" to open the phone function on the iPhone. Tap "Keypad" to enter a phone number, or tap "Contacts" to see a list of commonly used numbers. Press the "Home" button to go back to the main screen, or tap "Back" to return to the previous screen.
- 5). Flick your finger left or right across the home screen to scroll the home screen pages. As you install more apps, either through the "Apps" feature on the iPhone or through iTunes, your iPhone automatically adds more pages of home screens. To move or delete an application, tap and hold any icon until all of your icons begin to jiggle, and then drag the icon with your finger to move it, or press the little red "X" beside it to delete it.
