Decorating a fish tank with awesome tank decor can be expensive, especially if you are really passionate about making the most gorgeous aquarium theme for your living space.
Cheap fish tank decorations can look as cheap as the price tag and if you want to have a great looking tank, you would generally have to fork out a lot to build your design.
But all is not lost.
If you are on a tight budget but still want to create a beautiful design for your tank, all you need to do is just look around your home.
Believe it or not, there are so many gorgeous things from around your house that could easily go into your aquarium.
Things That Should Not Go Into The Tank There are so many things that you might want to throw into the water but there are many things that you should not.
Let's look at some of the stuff that you should never put inside an aquarium.
Firstly, metal is definitely out of the question.
Metal oxidizes in water.
Putting a piece of iron, no matter how small will introduce rust into the water and poison it.
So if you have a piece of ornament that you would love to use, but that has some metal parts on it, you could try to remove them if you can.
But make sure you remove every single piece.
If you can't, scrap the idea of using it.
Don't even think of coating over the metal parts with anything.
It just is not worth the risk.
Next, avoid using ornaments that are painted on.
The biggest issue about house ornaments is that many of them are hand painted.
This is actually a big appeal when we buy house decor.
But this is bad for the tank.
This is because the paint would eventually leak into the water and poison it.
The paint should be moulded onto the ornament if possible.
Lastly, automated stuff using batteries are cute on a mantle but deadly in an aquarium.
Some of you may laugh when I say don't put anything with batteries into the aquarium but believe it or not, there are people that actually do that.
The object may be said to be waterproof, but there is a big difference between being waterproof and being soaked in the water 24/7.
Batteries are cylinder tubes containing extremely toxic chemicals and they will leak into the water eventually.
Great Stuff From Your House That You Can Use Here are some of the cool things from your house that you could arrange inside your aquarium to create awesome designs.
One of the best things that you could place inside the aquarium are china that are used for food.
The fact that they are meant to be eaten off means that they are safe for even the fish.
They may have designs on them but they would never leak into the water.
What I once did was arrange a set of teacups and a teapot inside an aquarium to make it look like a tea time setting.
I carefully chipped a hole in the teapot that allowed the fish to used it as a cave.
Kids toys are another great item that you could use in the aquarium.
Make sure you wash them carefully because knowing how kids play with their toys, you won't want to dump a ton of germs in with your fish.
Try to see if you can get a couple of them from the same cartoon show or set so that you can work a theme around it.
Another thing that you could use in the fish tank are garden decor.
They have been created to withstand harsh weather and they will last in your tank.
Just make sure you use plain garden decor that is not painted on.
These are a few little tips that you could use to build an awesome aquarium theme on a shoestring budget.
Using stuff that you can find around the house as tank decor is more than possible, its something you should do.
