Instructions for an Auto Battery

    Removal

    • Turn off the car and let it cool down before you begin. Open the hood, look at the battery and locate the black and red cable attached to it. Loosen and take away the nut that keeps the black cable in place. Do the same for the red cable. Remove the clamp that secures the battery in its position.

Lift the battery up and out of its spot. Be careful not to get battery acid on your skin or clothes. Set it down but not on a cement surface. Use both hands because the battery may be heavy. Clean the battery with either paper towels or a rag. Clear the corrosion away from the clamps and other sections using a wire brush.

    Replacement

    • Keep the new battery on a work bench or something other than cement because the cement will drain the liquid from the battery. Ensure that you have the right-sized battery. Do not install a battery that is the wrong size even if it fits into the tray. Lift the new battery and gently place it into the tray. Connect the black wire to the negative terminal and the red cable into the positive terminal. Use a wrench to tighten the nuts, securing the battery cables. Check the wires by trying to wiggle them. If you move then, you need to tighten them until they cease to wiggle.

Close the hood of the vehicle. If you want to, turn the vehicle on and test the battery to make sure it is working. If you encounter any problems with the new battery, take it to the service shop for inspection.

    Disposal

    • Because of the materials in the battery, it is important to dispose of the old battery correctly. In most cases, the business that sold you the battery will take it back from you and give you the core charge fee back. In other cases, there are recycling centers you can return them to as well.

Check the local codes and regulations before disposing of the battery. There may be different programs available that can assist you with this.
