Google, Yahoo!, Or Bing; Who Will Provide Search Services For Safari?

Apple's search deal with Google, which saw Google's search engine become the default search service for Safari across all of the various Apple platforms, is about to expire. Waiting in the wings are Yahoo!, Bing, and perhaps others, all vying to replace Google as the default search engine in Safari.

The big three search contenders all have deals with Apple revolving around various services. Yahoo! provides stock and other news data to iOS devices.

Bing is the search service behind Siri. In addition to being Safari's search service, Google also provides mapping services. But the big deal remains being the default search engine for Safari.

The current Safari contract will expire in 2015, and so far, Yahoo! and Microsoft have been making inquiries about providing the search service for Safari. Rumors suggest that the current Google deal provides Apple close to $1 billion a year, so Yahoo! or Microsoft will most likely have to beat Google at the bottom line to win the search contract.

The Mac version of Safari directly supports four search services: Google, Bing, Yahoo!, and DuckDuckGo. There's no indication that Safari will drop any of these search services, or add any new ones. The only question is who will be the default service, and be in line for the majority of ad revenue generated by all of the Mac users who use Safari's default search engine.
