How to Fertilize Flowering Trees

    • 1). Use the shovel to clear away all the grass surrounding the trees base, coming out approximately 2 feet in a circular pattern.

    • 2). Thoroughly mix the fertilizer granules into the soil, making sure to use the amount designated on the back of the container--each fertilizer is different.

    • 3). Lightly water the soil, melting the granulates to soak into the root base of the tree.

    • 4). Cover the soil completely with wood chips, making sure to work your way all the way up to the base of the tree. Doing this will help to keep the nutrients in the soil and protected until the roots can begin to soak them up.

    • 5). It's best to fertilize a flowering tree in the fall, after the growing season has passed. After the first year of fertilizing, it's again safe to promote grass growth around the trees base.
