Glass Repair Hints

    Avoid Broken Glass

    • A broken window may mean there are still shards of broken glass in the window frame. In this case, it is a good idea to carefully remove the entire frame, take it outside and place it on a flat surface covered with an old blanket. The blanket will make it easier to capture those shards of broken glass and discard them. After removing all the glass from the window frame be sure to vacuum the area thoroughly. It is also a good idea to thoroughly inspect the wood frame while it is laid out on the ground. Accidents that break the window glass can often damage the frame as well, so be on the lookout for cracks or splits in the wood. If damage is apparent it may be necessary to replace the entire window instead of just the glass.

    Cut the Glass to Size

    • One of the hardest parts of glass repair is cutting the replacement glass to the same size. Take the measurements to a hardware store or home improvement center and get the glass cut to size there. Also be sure to use the right thickness of glass: you can measure the thickness by examining one of the larger pieces of broken glass. If none of the broken glass is available, you can check the paperwork that came with your windows.

    Windshield Repair

    • Replacing a car windshield can be an expensive proposition, but if your windshield has only a small crack or chip it may be possible to repair the damage without scrapping the entire windshield. Windshield repair kits use a special resin that is injected into the glass of the windshield to fill cracks and dings. These kits can repair damaged windshields and stop those cracks from spreading. Even so it is important to keep in mind that many state inspection programs will fail a car if the portion of the windshield directly in front of the driver is damaged in any way, so it is important to check your state's regulations before getting started.

The most important thing when repairing a windshield crack or ding is to make sure no air bubbles are introduced into the glass with the resin. In order to reduce the chances of an air bubble it is important to clean and dry the area thoroughly. After the area has been cleaned and dried place the plunger firmly against the crack or ding and push down hard to start the flow of resin. Watch as the resin is introduced and make sure it comes out in a solid line.
