Perhaps one of the most popular drugs for addressing major depressive disorder or MDD would be sertraline. The drug, christened by the company Phzer as Zoloft, can also be categorized under SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Its main function is to maintain the biochemical balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, thus, being able to manage the symptoms of psychosocial disorders. In depression there is a decreased amount of serotonin in the brain, then drugs like Zoloft act by stimulating the release of more serotonin in the brain to maintain chemical equilibrium in the brain.
The positive effects of Zoloft that can be observed empirically include an increased appetite, better sleeping patterns, decreased episodes of sudden mood changes, controlled compulsive and other defensive behaviors, and increased energy to perform tasks.
Most of the Zoloft side effects are relatively mild and can be remedied by home care regimens. The earliest Zoloft side effects observed are issues in the digestive system such as nausea and vomiting, dryness of mouth, bloating, lack of appetite, increased frequency of flatulence, constipation or diarrhea, and changes in the weight of the individual. Proper food selection such as avoiding gas forming foods and keeping a high fiber diet; eating slowly, and maintaining adequate fluid intake can be helpful in the management of these side effects.
The changes in the levels of serotonin or other neurotransmitters can cause Zoloft side effects that affect the involuntary structures of the body. The problems of dizziness, easy fatigability, headache and drowsiness can be alleviated by getting sufficient rest and sleep while changes in movement such as hand or foot tingling, trembling or shakiness can also be observed.
Zoloft side effects like nervousness, episodes of anxiety and disorientation can be managed by having someone to talk and discuss things with. Just like other drugs indicated for depression, other side effects affect the reproductive and sexual pattern of the individual such as women experience changes in their menstrual period while men complain of delayed ejaculation. Couples may also be bothered by the lack of sexual desire and the inability of the partner to achieve orgasm. Discovering other ways to excite the sexual interest of the partner, as well as an open communication between couples can be helpful for these side effects of the drug.
The previously mentioned Zoloft side effects are relatively mild, but these ones upon noticing must be referred to the nearest health care provider or medical facility. These serious side effects include seizure episodes that may overwork the brain, sore throat or fever indicating a compromised immune system, unusual bruising or presence of black, tarry stools which means that bleeding is already present; changes in heart rate and rhythm, and hallucinations that may cause the individual to commit suicide or become violent to other people.
Initiating measures to ensure the safety of the individual, regularly consulting with the doctor or health care provider; and taking the drug as prescribed are very much advised since these measures are some ways to prevent these Zoloft side effects from occurring.
