How to Fight Mosquitoes in Your Yard

How to Fight Mosquitoes:

Mosquitoes are becoming a big problem in many areas of the US. Instances of West Nile Virus are increasing and the public is demanding more information on how to protect themselves. The following paragraphs provide information about mosquitoes and tips to fight them. For more information visit: The Skeeter Defeater.

The hours from dusk to dawn are peak hours. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), says ""the hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many species of mosquitoes."

The two major characteristics that mosquitoes find appealing at dusk and dawn are 1) reduced exposure to the sun and 2) lower temperatures (cooler outside). The intricate exoskeleton of the mosquito cannot handle much direct sunlight. Mosquitoes spend most of the midday hours in shaded areas under the foliage of trees and plants, and near standing water that is out of direct contact with sunlight. Most yards are open to enough natural light through the day to keep mosquitoes at bay.

When dusk comes, mosquitoes leave their shaded breeding grounds and begin looking for their next meal. The bad news is that this process can ruin many a relaxing evening if no precautions are taken. The good news is that the mosquitoes are exposed and vulnerable at these times. This makes a product like the Skeeter Defeater very effective. Similarly, mosquitoes favor temperatures no higher than 85 degrees F, and usually no lower than 55 degrees F (although there are exceptions). The cooler air of dawn and dusk make for an enticing opportunity for mosquitoes to make their move.

The lifetime of a mosquito is very short. While every species is different, the most common types found in the United States live about 30 days. Mosquitoes spend about the first ten to 14 days of that in the water developing from egg to adult. Interestingly, mosquitoes rarely go more than 300 feet from where they're born during their 30-40 day life cycle.
Remember to drain any standing water because mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items that hold water.

  • • At least once or twice a week, empty water from flower pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets, barrels, and cans.
