- 1). Install iTunes. The 4th Generation iPod comes with an iTunes installation CD packaged in with the device in it's box. Simply put the disc in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, wait a few minutes for the iTunes installation screen to appear and follow the directions to install the program.
- 2). Connect your iPod to your computer using the included USB link cable. One end plugs into the port on the bottom of the iPod and the other plugs into a USB port on your computer. The iPod is a plug and play device, meaning that when you plug the device into your computer for the first time it will automatically recognize the connection and install the appropriate drivers on your computer. Plug your iPod into your computer and give it a few seconds to do this.
- 3). Connect your computer to the internet and open iTunes. With the iPod connected to the computer, click on its name from the left side of the main iTunes program window. This will bring up your iPod 4th Generation's settings page. Click on the button that reads "Check for Updates" to download any available software updates for your iPod's operating system. If these updates are available they will be downloaded and installed automatically. At this point it is safe to sync music files to your device.
