How to Cut Back a Spirea Shrub

    • 1). Prune the spirea in the early spring before new growth appears, using pruning shears.

    • 2). Remove diseased or dead branches. Cut the branches down to the healthy wood. The branch also can be completely removed from the base of the plant, if desired.

    • 3). Locate branches that rub against each other. Cut these down at the base of the shrub at ground level.

    • 4). Cut back the spirea. Remove half of the branches to thin it out so new flowers can grow. Thinning out the spirea will allow air to circulate and sunlight to penetrate the branches.

    • 5). Shape the spirea to your desires or prune it evenly to make it symmetrical and attractive.
