How to Care for Mandevilla Plants

    • 1). Plant your mandevilla plant in a sunny location, though the plant can tolerate partial shade. The soil should drain well, as mandevilla prefers slightly dry soil and not saturated or soggy soil.

    • 2). Amend your soil to drain better by spreading 2-3 inches of a mixture of equal parts of compost, peat moss and sand on top of the planting spot. Work this mixture into the soil with a shovel. The mixture should be mixed to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

    • 3). Plant your mandevilla by digging a hole, with a shovel, that is large enough for the plant's root system. Place the roots in the hole, then fill in around the roots with the amended soil. Continue to fill in the hole until it is filled. Gently tap down the soil to eliminate any air pockets in the soil and provide a good contact between soil and roots.

    • 4). Water the soil and your mandevilla thoroughly after planting. Thereafter, water only when the soil is dry. Mandevilla have a large, thick root system that retains water. Allow the soil to dry out between watering, then water slowly to thoroughly moisten the soil and roots.

    • 5). Feed a 10-20-10 formulated fertilizer, or a hibiscus formulated fertilizer, as directed on the package, every other week during the spring and summer when the mandevilla is blooming. Mandevilla plants are heavy feeders because of the abundant bud and flower production.
