- Thousands of endangered seabirds such as albatross die yearly by getting caught and drowning by the lines, and from receiving wounds from the hooks when diving for the bait.
- Attracted to the bait or the light sticks used to attract fish, sea turtles swallow hooks and die slow, painful deaths or get tangled in the lines and drown.
- The bait and fish caught by the hooks attract dolphins, sperm whales, pilot whales and orcas. They are injured swallowing hooks or become entangled in the lines.
- Many long-line ships target sharks, particularly shark fins. Sharks are easily caught with these lines, but in many cases, the fins are cut off and the sharks thrown back to bleed to death.
- This efficient fishing method is blamed for the demise of certain species such as the Patagonian toothfish.
