How to Make Your Own Window Draft Blocker

    • 1). Measure the width of your window inside the frame. Add 4 inches.

    • 2). Cut two pieces of fabric as long as this measurement, and 6 to 8 inches wide.

    • 3). Put the fabric pieces right-sides together.

    • 4). Sew down one long side, across one short end and up the second long side with a sewing machine or a needle and thread, using a 5/8-inch seam allowance. Leave the second short end open.

    • 5). Clip the corners diagonally and trim the seam allowance to within 1/4 inch of the stitching.

    • 6). Turn the fabric right-side out. Use a pencil or a knitting needle to push the corners out.

    • 7). Fill a long, narrow plastic bag with rice, dried beans or plastic doll beads using a funnel or a foam cup with the narrow end cut off. Tie the top in a knot. If you don't have a bag of this shape, use zipper-type, food-storage bags filled to 1/3 of capacity. Keeping the filler at the bottom of the bag, roll the flat, empty section around the filled section and tape it securely with packing or duct tape. Tape the bags end-to-end, using as many as needed to equal the length of the fabric tube.

    • 8). Insert the plastic bag or bags into the fabric tube.

    • 9). Fold the seam allowance to the inside on the open edge of the fabric tube. Sew it closed using a needle and thread.
