How to Set Up Bait to Fish for Steelhead

    Fish Roe

    • 1). Hold the hook in either hand with the curved end down and the shaft pointing up.

    • 2). Push three or four eggs up the shaft of the hook. The last one must be just ready to break the point with its skin. This will keep them firmly on the hook and will keep them from being thrown off during a cast.

    • 3). Hold the bait downward and allow about 1 foot of line to slide through your hand. Bounce the bait up and down a few times to assure the bait is secure.

    Mealworm

    • 1). Hold the shaft of the hook horizontal with the hook facing up.

    • 2). Thread the worm over the top of the hook.

    • 3). Push the hook completely through the worm. A little of the tip of the hook must run through the tail of the worm.

    Shiners

    • 1). Hold the fish firmly in one hand. If you are left handed use your right hand; if you are right handed use your left hand. Hold the head of the shiner between your thumb and forefinger.

    • 2). Slip the hook between the lips of the shiner.

    • 3). Hold the shiner upside down and cast as gently as possible. Do not use a whip motion since this will jerk the hook out of the shiner.
