- 1). Launch GIMP and create a new workbook by clicking "File" and "New." Choose a workbook size by choosing a "Template" from the drop-down box, or insert custom dimensions. Alternatively, click "File" and "Open" to open a pre-existing picture file to use as your background.
- 2). Select the "Paintbrush Tool" located in the main toolbox and click on the "Brush" icon in the settings, which appear in the bottom half of the toolbox. Choose "Calligraphic Brush"; double-click and drag the tab of the Scale scroll bar to the right to increase the brush size.
- 3). Click on the "Foreground Color" box in the main toolbox. Select a brown color from the gradient preview and click "OK."
- 4). Double-click your cursor at the bottom of your workbook and drag your cursor toward the top, angling outward to the left or to the right to look like a branch. Continue to generate your branches this way, one at a time, varying the angle of each branch. Overlap your brush toward the bottom of the workbook to keep your tree trunk small, if desired.
- 5). Click on the "Brush" icon again and click "Vine." Drag the tab of the Scale scroll bar to the right to increase the brush size. Double-click your cursor within the workbook and drag the cursor across each branch. Repeat, dragging your cursor over each branch multiple times for a thicker vine look.
