- 1). Put on your protective clothing along with gloves, eye goggles and breathing mask. Read the instructions of the sulfamic acid crystal thoroughly. Mix the acid crystals, following the instructions to the letter. If you can't find sulfamic acid crystal, phosphoric acid substitute can be used instead.
- 2). Dip a corner of the sponge into the acid mixture and wet the thinset with the acid. Even if you have a whole floor to do, work in small sections, as the acid should not be left to dry out on the concrete.
- 3). Agitate the thinset and acid with a hand sander or a power scrubber. The sander or scrubber should be set to the lowest power setting. The acid works on the Portland cement content of the thinset and breaks it down. Keep agitating the thinset wet with acid until you grind it down and reach the concrete.
- 4). Reapply the acid to a new section and grind as you did before. Continue this way until all the thinset is removed from the concrete.
- 5). Rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water using a hose or buckets. Mop up the water with old rags. Discard the rags once the floor is dry. Discard the sponge used as well.
