- The iPod Shuffle interface features a central, circular button and a ring-shaped button that runs around its periphery. Left and right arrow symbols exist at the left and right edges of this ring-shaped button. Clicking the "left" arrow returns you to the previous song you were enjoying. Clicking the right arrow, on the other hand, fast-forwards you to a different, random song. For example, if you press the left button to return to your previous song but then press the right arrow again, you won't necessarily come back to your original song.
- Other symbols are located at the top and the bottom of the ring-shaped button, name "Plus Sign" and "Minus Sign" icons. These symbols control the volume of the iPod Shuffle. Not surprisingly, tapping the "Plus Sign" causes an increase in the volume output of the device, which tapping the "Minus Sign" decreases volume. You know you've increased the device's volume as much as possible if repeated taps on the "Plus Sign" don't result in continued volume increases.
- The center, circular button controls whether or not the iPod shuffle plays at all. If you don't hear any sound coming out of the device, tap the button to play songs. If you don't want to hear music coming out of the iPod Shuffle, press the button to pause what's currently playing. Note that both the "Plus/Minus" and "Arrow" icons work while the iPod Shuffle is paused -- modifications you make to volume or play order reflect once you begin playing music again.
- The only other button on the iPod Shuffle is a bar-shaped button on the right side of its top surface. Known as the "Hold" button, this button allows you to make the other buttons on the screen active or deactivated. If a bright orange surface appears beside the button, it means it is in the "Lock" position -- pressing the buttons on the face of the iPod Shuffle has no affect. Slide the button left or right to change whether or not it's locked.
