- 1). Remove large build-ups of mold using a plastic spatula or craft stick. Do not use a knife or other metal utensil, or you will cause scratches.
- 2). Wipe the headstone with a damp cloth to remove loose mold. Choose a soft cloth and avoid coarse or abrasive materials.
- 3). Use water and a soft-bristled brush to lightly scrub the headstone. Rinse the headstone often as you clean to prevent brushing the mold into cracks.
- 4). Use a non-ionic soap or detergent only if absolutely necessary. Non-ionic soaps and detergents are available at janitorial stores, conservation stores, photography supply stores and some livestock supply stores. Mix the non-ionic soap or detergent according to the directions that come with it and use the mixture as you used water in Step 3.
- 5). Apply a sealant only if mold is an extreme issue. Special marble sealants are available from headstone suppliers. Sealant should only be used as a last resort.
