- 1). Inspect the roof vents for cracks, leaks or breakage.
- 2). Replace any broken vent hardware. Visit your local hardware or building supply store for replacement hardware.
- 3). Caulk any cracks or leaks around the vents. Apply using a caulk gun to achieve even lines and thickness, and to make application easier.
- 4). Leave vents cracked and uncovered in your attic to keep it ventilated. Resist the temptation to cover them for winter with a bag or other wrapping.
- 5). Cover your vents temporarily with a cardboard box when you need to clean ice or snow off the roof. This protects them from damage from shovels, snow blowers and other cleaning hardware. Uncover them as soon as you're done cleaning.
