- 1). Assemble the fishing rod by inserting the tip section into the handle section, aligning the two pieces so the wire guides on the rod are in a straight line.
- 2). Attach the reel to the rod by inserting the front foot of the reel under the seat on the forward end of the rod handle and securing the rear rod seat over the rear reel foot by tightening the lock nut by hand.
- 3). Thread the line under the bail of the spincasting reel, through the wire line level on a baitcasting reel, then through the guides and out through the the rod tip.
- 4). Tie an artificial lure directly to the end of the line with a clinch knot, or tie on a swivel, if rigging for live bait. Instructions for tying a clinch knot are linked in the reference section.
- 5). Tie a two-hook leader to the other end of the swivel when fishing with bait. Insert the loop of line on the end of a snelled hook through one of the loops in the leader, then place the hook through the loop and pull tight. Repeat with the second hook.
- 6). Attach a sinker weight to the bottom of the rig using the steel snap on the bottom.
- 7). Bait the hooks with squid strips, chunks of shrimp or chopped mullet, clams or pieces of bloodworm for inshore fishing. Use whole fish such as herring or croaker for deep water, or large rubber lures made of surgical tubing to resemble squid.
