- The microphone is a necessary piece of equipment when doing karaoke. Stack several sheet cakes on top of one another. Use a serrated knife to carve the cakes into the shape of a microphone. Cover the cakes in buttercream frosting, using black for the microphone's handle and gray for the microphone's head. Create a wire for the bottom of the microphone with a length of black shoestring licorice.
- Another necessary piece of equipment when doing karaoke is the screen on which the words of the songs appear. To make a karaoke screen cake, cover square, stacked sheet cakes in black fondant. Roll out a piece of blue fondant and cut it into a square shape that is 1/2 inch smaller around than the top of the cake. Place the square on top of the cake and use white edible paint to write a line or two of the cake recipient's favorite karaoke song.
- Another cake idea that requires little decorating skills is a compact disc cake. Cut a whole from the center of the cake using a round cookie cutter. Cover a round cake in fondant or white butter cream, decorating it to look like a CD for the karaoke machine. Write the title and artist of the cake recipient's favorite karaoke song across the top of the cake.
- Create a karaoke scene on a sheet cake using buttercream frosting or fondant to make a stage. Add a small plastic toy of a singer holding a microphone. Alternatively, mold the singer out of gum paste. Also, add a karaoke screen on the cake for the singer to watch.
- Stack at least three cakes in different sizes on top of one another to make a tiered cake. Cover the cakes with fondant in the color of your choice. Cut out silhouettes of singers holding microphones and place them around the sides of the cake. Alternatively, use the solid colored fondant as a backdrop to add the words from the recipient's favorite karaoke song.
