How to Plant Tomatoes Upside Down in Milk Jugs

    • 1). Wash a plastic milk jug thoroughly with hot water and soap. Rinse well and allow to dry.

    • 2). Cut off the bottom of the milk jug to create a large opening.

    • 3). Poke four holes near the bottom of the jug. There should be one hole on each side. Thread wire through each hole and twist to secure. Twist all four wires at the top to form a loop for hanging.

    • 4). Turn the tomato plant upside down and carefully put it in the big opening you've cut into the jug, which is now upside down, with the little opening--the former top--facing down. Thread the leaves of the tomato seedling through the small opening now at the bottom.

    • 5). Remove the soil from the seedling cup and break it apart inside the milk jug. Fill the jug the rest of the way with potting soil.

    • 6). Water the soil for several minutes. It will need to be moistened all the way through but not soggy.

    • 7). Hang the jug in a sunny location. Water daily, as the soil will dry out quickly.
