Tamoxifen Risks

    Blood Clots

    • One of the serious risks of Tamoxifen is the potential to develop blood clots. This risk was the most prominent in women who were also receiving chemotherapy.

    Cataracts

    • Clouding of the eye lens has risen in numbers of those taking the medication Tamoxifen. Scarring of the cornea and changes in the retina are also potential risk factors in those taking Tamoxifen.

    Cancer

    • Taking Tamoxifen increases the risk of developing two types of uterine cancer, uterine sarcoma and endometrial cancer. Regular pelvic examinations should be performed on women who take Tamoxifen.

    Menopausal Symptoms

    • A woman taking this drug may notice symptoms such as vaginal dryness or irritation, irregular menses, hot flashes, fatigue, nausea, vaginal discharge and vomiting. These menopausal symptoms do not signify menopause, however.

    Stroke

    • The potential for having a stroke is noted to be greater in those taking Tamoxifen for breast cancer. The person taking this medication should be alert for symptoms of a stroke and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms are noted.
