Isoptin Side Effects

    Uses

    • Isoptin is a prescription drug belonging to a group known as calcium channel blockers. It works effectively by relaxing the muscles of the heart and limiting the number of nerve impulses. In doing so, Isoptin slows the heart's contractions and eases blood flow. The general relaxation of the heart muscle reduces blood pressure and eases chest pain. Isoptin is also used, although less commonly, to treat manic depression, migraines and asthma.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Use of Isoptin has been known to cause the following serious side effects: irregular heartbeat, congestive heart failure, fever, sore throat, headache, difficulty breathing, unusual weight gain, stomach pain, nausea, fainting, severe skin rash and fluid retention (swelling). Severe allergic reaction, including acute swelling of the face and throat, should be treated seriously. If any of these occur, a patient should seek immediate medical attention.

    Common Side Effects

    • According to Drugs.com, Isoptin may cause the following number of common side effects: dizziness, constipation, headache, lightheadedness, nausea and fatigue. If any of these intensify or persist, contact your doctor, as it may be a sign of a developing health threat.

    Using Isoptin

    • Take Isoptin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or duration of the medication without consulting a physician. Since Isoptin is administered in tablet form, do not chew or crush the medication, as it may cause an inappropriate release into your system. Use of the drug should be coupled with a strict diet and exercise plan to be fully effective. Isoptin can be taken with or without food and should be stored at room temperature.

    Warning

    • In the event of surgery, notify your surgeon of your use of Isoptin. Avoid alcoholic beverages, as consumption may increase the risk of side effects. Also avoid taking a double dose of the medication to compensate for a missed dose. Notify your doctor of any liver or kidney disease before taking Isoptin.
